ASCLEPIUS — Patron of the Healers

In Greek mythology, Asclepius was the son of Apollo, cut from his dying mother's womb and raised by the centaur Chiron, who taught him the art of medicine. He grew so skilled at healing that he could restore the dead to life — a gift so dangerous it upset the natural order. Hades complained that the dead were no longer arriving in his domain, and Zeus, fearing mankind would use Asclepius' knowledge to escape death entirely, struck him down with a thunderbolt.

Even in death, Asclepius endured as the god of medicine, worshipped at healing sanctuaries across the Greek world where the sick came for treatment in his name. His symbol — a serpent coiled around a staff, representing renewal and the knowledge to cure — is still the emblem worn by doctors and medics today.
